Hickory Dickory Dock

Hickory Dickory Dock, an educational app for the iPhone/iPad is FREE again for a limited time. Your child can learn to read a clock to the nearest hour while playing with an adorable, purple mouse. Kids begin by setting the time on the clock. For each hour there is an exploration that sends the lovable little mouse bouncing, springing and sleeping his way through the nursery rhyme accompanied by catchy music, sounds effects, and fun animations. The explorations in Hickory Dickory Dock simulate principles of physics –  gravity, collision, friction, weight, etc. as kids play pinball with the mouse, balance weights on a set of scales, and bounce the mouse off the walls of the clock. Very cute for preschoolers – a fun way to learn how to tell time with some physics slipped in as a bonus 🙂

The app includes parental controls so that parents/teachers can choose which areas they want their child/children to work on. Up to 40 players can be entered and the topics for each player can vary – it’s fully customizable by individual! And… the app keeps track of each child’s performance – perfect for a preschool or kindergarten classroom. Teachers could start by assigning general practice for all then reset the players and customize it to meet individual kids’ needs  – AWESOME!!

One of the BEST thing about this educational app is the appropriateness of the topics. It teaches numbers to 20, counting to 10, upper and lower case letters, 11 colors, 9 shapes, and letter sounds. I was so excited that it taught the hard and soft sound of c!! Download this one today – it is rarely FREE!

Alien Buddies

Alien Buddies

Alien Buddies is FREE for a limited time. Formerly listed as one of Apple’s “New & Noteworthy” and geared towards kids ages 3 – 7, this educational app features 4 different activities (matching, puzzles, dot-to-dot, and stickers) with varying levels of difficulty. Matching can be played in 2 modes (visual or audio) to reinforce colors, shapes, numbers and letters. Puzzles can be set to contain 4, 6, or 8 pieces. In the sticker section, kids add out-of-this-world stickers to 8 different space scenes.  All activities are well done but I especially like the dot-to-dot activity which has a “please help” or an “I can do it myself” button. Kids need to visually recognize the order of the numbers to connect the dots and the app counts as the dots are connected – love it! The app is cute, colorful, and sure to appeal to kids!

Shiny Party

Shiny Party

FREE for a limited time – Shiny Party, a math app for preschoolers. Charlie the monkey and Alice the giraffe are getting ready for their friend’s surprise birthday party. Kids learn about basic geometric shapes as they help. They find matching shapes, do shape puzzles, build cupcakes – all within the context of the story. All activities are age appropriate. Just have one minor concern about the content… the app teaches kids that a square has 4 sides rather than 4 equal sides. All in all, this educational app is great – colorful with adorable characters. Also, you can take a picture of your child with the characters and save it to your photos – a really cute feature. Nicely done and fun for little ones!

Kindergarten Subtraction

Kindergarten Subtraction

FREE for a limited time – Kindergarten Subtraction. This educational app uses 8 different visual learning activities help kids understand the process of subtracting numbers 0-10. To start, create a profile for each child. Pictures can be added from your camera roll – making it easy for kids to find their files. The app narrates (in English or Spanish) and visually demonstrates how to use the interactive elements of each activity. Then the app uses those 8 different activities to give kids LOTS of practice subtracting. The app provides progress screens for parents or teachers to see how their kids are doing – a great feature. The app is organized so that kids go through the activities in a specific order. If kids already know subtraction -1 they still have to go through all of those activities before they get to subtraction -2. Perhaps an update could make the app a bit more customizable. That being said, the app shows kids how subtraction works in a variety of ways!

Pick-a-Path is a FREE math game from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Kids help Okta the octopus reach a target number by choosing the best path from the top maze to the bottom of a maze in this educational app. There are 7 different levels with 7 puzzles in each level. The puzzles start with basic operations then move to fractions, negative numbers, decimals, and other more difficult skills. Kids have to plan out a strategy to reach the target which can be a specific value, a minimum value, or a maximum value. This app provides a lot of good skills practice.
