FREE for a limited time – I Learn with Transportation for the iPhone/iPad. This app for toddlers teaches word names, sounds, colors, shapes, numbers, and environments of different means of transportation. Colorful, happy vehicles travel through the pages of this interactive book. Kids tap the vehicles to learn more. I like that the developers set the app up so that kids can name the sound, color, shape, etc. on their own and then they tap to see if they are correct. The app is also bilingual – it can easily be switched to Spanish. Your little one will love exploring the 21 different means of transportation in this cute app. Recommended!

Montessori* Letter Sounds
FREE for a limited time – Montessori* Letter Sounds for the iPhone/iPad, an app that focuses on teaching letter sounds. Based on the Montessori* method, Montessori* Letter Sounds has 4 levels: I Spy, Letter Sounds, Mix & Match, and Sound it Out. In “I Spy” (up to 3 years), kids identify sounds – at the beginning, at the end, and in the word. “Letter Sounds” helps kids (up to 4 years) memorize letter shapes & sounds. Kids trace the letter, watch how the letter is formed, then write it in the sand. The letter is identified by sound rather than by its name. After earning enough marbles, kids may go on to “Mix and Match” (from age 4) which combines hearing and seeing the letters. The final level is “Sound it Out” (from age 4 1/2) which requires kids to write words with a moveable alphabet. The app also has a tool box which includes: the phonetic alphabet in script/cursive/upper case, a notebook for tracing the letters, the sandbox for learning how to write letters, and the image box to increase vocabulary. FYI – it is the short vowel sounds that are taught in this app and the sound for A is NOT the A as in apple/alligator/cat/ etc. It is more like a (the word) or the A at the end of toga. This app can be used by more than one child and can be switched to French.
Art ABC
FREE today, Art ABC for the iPhone/iPad. Like all alphabet books, this app teaches kids the names & sounds of each letter. What makes it unique is that it also incorporates famous works of art. Each letter of the alphabet is presented on a fine art background. There is also a hidden object (with the featured letter) in the background. Kids explore the page by tapping to reveal each object – each in a different way! The app also contains a list of all the famous art included in the app – titles, artists, nationality, medium used, year, and location of the painting. This app could also be used with older students in art class. Nicely done!!

ABC Expedition
ABC Expedition is currently $2.99 but I was able to download it on a FREE day. Captain Wallace leads a tour of the zoo in this aesthetically pleasing alphabet app. The alphabet letters are placed on large buttons – easy for kids to push. Each button take the child to an animated page featuring that letter. The page contains both upper & lower case letters and an animal (with its word) that begins with that letter. The animated animals are appealing and include sound effects. GRReat! Both words and letters are pronounced when the child touches them. This app is simple but well done – love the unique color scheme! What a great app for toddlers who love animals and are learning the alphabet. Use it before or after a trip to the zoo! Keep reading my blog to find out when apps are offered for FREE.
Wee Sing & Learn ABC
FREE again today (November 9, 2012), this app for the iPhone/iPad normally sells for $2.99. Wee Sing has been around for over 30 years. When my children were small, we always had a Wee Sing tape in our car. This app teaches toddlers the alphabet in a musically fun way. Every letter has a page with its own song featuring an animal with an instrument (both beginning with that letter). There are also three additional words for each letter which are pronounced and spelled. The real sound of every animal and each instrument are also included in the app. This app is well done with great attention to detail – a must have for every toddler 🙂
Highly recommended!!
ABC House
FREE until November 12, ABC House for the iPhone/iPad introduces your toddler (3 – 5) to 60+ everyday things through sight, sound, and touch. The app opens to a grid arranged in ABC order. Kids can tap on a letter to find objects that begin with that letter or they can tap on a specific object to learn about it. As an object’s photo appears, a child’s voice says the initial letter then reads the name of the object (which appears in writing at the bottom of the screen). A little cartoon person drops down on the left hand side of the screen with a link to a video clip or an interactive scene where kids may iron a shirt, clean with a duster, open drawers, etc. The child can scroll to the left for additional pictures and videos about each object.
This app needs an internet connection to work because the 100+ videos are actually links from You Tube. They are chosen by Peapod Labs and checked to be interesting and safe for kids. Kids cannot link from this app into other You Tube content. This app is nicely done – great for building vocabulary and beginning to read/spell words.
