Sago Mini Road Trip

image

on sale for $.99 – Sago Mini Road Trip, a darling app for preschoolers. Kids go on a road trip with Jinja the cat. Each adventure begins by answering three questions: where are we going, what do we need to take, and what vehicle will we drive. There are six destinations: a big city, a beach, the mountains, and more. Once kids decide where to go, it’s time to pack their suitcases with the appropriate clothing and items for their chosen destination. Then they get to choose a fun vehicle to drive – a bus, a hot dog, a sporty car, a pickle, etc. I love the conversations that this app would inspire as kids prepare for their trips, especially when they go to pack their bags. Once the car is loaded, off they go. They can stop to wash their vehicle, gas it up, or just to enjoy the sites along the way. This educational app is cute and great for language development!

Santa’s Home

Santa's home
“He sees you when you’re sleeping. He knows when you’re awake.”
FREE again, just in time for the start of the Christmas season. Now you can see what Santa is doing with Santa’s Home. The app is a “LIVE” feed of Santa’s house – the bedroom, the kitchen, the living room, his office/workshop, and the outside grounds. Kids can keep track of what Santa is doing up at the North Pole. I checked in on Santa a few times – first he was in the kitchen washing his dishes, then he was on the computer checking his list, and a little after 11 PM he was in bed snoring. The app even displays the correct date and time to make it seem more realistic. The app also gives adults the option of can subscribing to Santa’s newsletter. Adults can also help kids send Santa one of their drawings that he will display in his workshop. Super cute!!
Teachers – This would be a fun one to use for creative writing!! It would also be fun for teaching prediction. :)

Dic-Dic

Dic-Dic

FREE for a limited time – Dic-Dic. Multilingual dictation to practise spelling, writing and sound-letter matching. This educational app helps kids learn to spell common words in four different languages (English, Spanish, Russian, French) and has 3 levels of difficulty. It’s great for kids who are beginning readers/spellers in their native language and/or for kids learning a new language. All words are read by native speakers of the language. Then the child tries to spell the word by typing its letters into the blanks – great for beginning word processing. Clues can be turned on or off depending on the level of the child. If a student misspells a word, the app urges him/her to try the word again. If the word is misspelled a second time, the app spells it correctly. I love this feature – positive encouragement to try again! The app tracks the child’s progress in albums (one for each level and language) so that parents/teachers can monitor success. It also includes an extra game to reward successful players. This app is suitable for a wide range of kids – check it out while it’s free. 🙂

image

FREE again for iPhone/iPad, Toca Tailor Fairy Tales has kids designing and tailoring clothes for two fairy tale characters. With a tap, the style of clothing can be changed. The length of the sleeves, pants, etc. is easily adjusted with a swipe. Kids then choose different colors & prints of fabric or they can create their own fabric using the built-in fabric camera. They can also access and use pictures from the camera roll. There are trims to add – buttons, pockets, etc. Finally, kids choose accessories – hats, scarves, shoes, etc. Kids can take a picture of their finished creations like they can in so many apps. BUT…. in this educational app you can use your own room as a background – how unique! Kids could create their own little elf, take pictures of it all over the house, and write their own “elf-on-a-shelf” story. The possibilities for creative writing using this feature are endless – LOVE it!! Very open-ended & creative for hours of fun!
