Spelling Star

spelling star

FREE for  limited time – Spelling Star, an educational app for practicing spelling lists. The app is simple to use – just type in and record the words. You may also include sentences to clarify the words’ meanings. Kids must spell each word correctly three times to become a Spelling Star.  Words are presented in random order. As kids practice, they can get a hint – a quick look at the word spelled correctly. When they spell a word without a hint, they earn a star. Spelling Star provides feedback after each word is spelled with the option to “try again” when an error is made. This educational app is great for home and/or school. Parents can use it to input spelling lists for multiple kids. Kids may enjoy inputting their own lists at the beginning of the week which would be GREAT practice! Teachers can create lists on one device and share those lists with anyone who has the Spelling Star app. Simple to use, effective, and tracks progress – what more do you need? 🙂

Animal Pre-K Learning Games for Kids with Skills on the Farm

farmFREE for a limited time – Animal Pre-K Learning Games for Kids with Skills on the Farm, a cute educational app for preschoolers. Lily the farmer leads kids through a series of games that teach preschool/K skills: colors, shapes, counting 1 – 10, groups & categories, sequencing & patterns, addition & subtraction. I like that the app teaches shapes in two ways – a circle and a donut, an oval and a watermelon, a rectangle and a bus, etc. And, I was particularly impressed that it names a kite shape as a rhombus. As kids play, they help the cute farm animals (Pinkie the pig, Oliver the horse, Bessie the cow, Cordelia the chicken, Gordon the goat, Sherman the sheep, Webster the duck, Pete the frog) find their way back home. The app is bright, colorful and full of positive encouragement. Nicely done, this app is sure to appeal to little ones.

Algebra Touch

algebra

FREE for a limited time – Algebra Touch. The animated lessons in this educational app will help kids learn or review algebraic skills. It uses a touch-based approach – tap the operation signs to simplify, drag digits to rearrange them, and draw lines to eliminate like terms. The app is really simple to use. It will not let kids make a move that does not follow the rules of math. They can keep trying a problem until they figure it out! How cool is that? And, the problems are randomly generated so that kids can practice again and again. It covers the following topics: simplification, like terms, multiply then divide, factors, elimination, equations, distribution, and exponents. This app was made possible with support from the Percepts and Concepts Laboratory of Indiana University and the Cave Lab at the University of Richmond.

 VERY cool!!

Dic-Dic

Dic-Dic

On sale for only $.99 – Dic-Dic. Multilingual dictation to practise spelling, writing and sound-letter matching. This educational app helps kids learn to spell common words in four different languages (English, Spanish, Russian, French) and has 3 levels of difficulty. It’s great for kids who are beginning readers/spellers in their native language and/or for kids learning a new language. All words are read by native speakers of the language. Then the child tries to spell the word by typing its letters into the blanks – great for beginning word processing. Clues can be turned on or off depending on the level of the child. If a student misspells a word, the app urges him/her to try the word again. If the word is misspelled a second time, the app spells it correctly. I love this feature – positive encouragement to try again! The app tracks the child’s progress in albums (one for each level and language) so that parents/teachers can monitor success. It also includes an extra game to reward successful players. This app is suitable for a wide range of kids – check it out while it’s free. 🙂

Writing Wizard – Kids Learn to Write Letters

Writing

On sale for only $.99 – Writing Wizard – Kids Learn to Write Letters, a fun educational app that teaches kids to write manuscript letters. The app teaches kids to print letters using 3 of the most common handwriting styles – Zaner-Bloser,  D’Nealian, or Handwriting Without Tears. Kids start by tapping a letter. That letter is named and its sound is given. The app then demonstrates how to trace the letter. Then kids trace the letter using animated stickers with sound effects. After tracing the letters, they can interact with them. The app can be customized for the child’s level in a variety of ways – letter size, difficulty, show/hide model, allow to stop between key points, etc. It also provides detailed reports for teachers/parents which include the ability to replay and export the child’s tracings to view kids’ progress! But the BEST part of this app is the ability to create your own word lists (and record audio for each word) – a perfect way to practice spelling and handwriting at the same time! This app is fantastic for so many reasons – highly recommended!
