Tap A Tune

This educational app makes me smile!! It’s adorable and FREE again for a limited time. Kids 2+ can play their own nursery rhymes (7 included) & holiday tunes (9 included) by tapping the animals as they pop out of holes in the ground. The app has 3 modes: baby mode (plays the tune correctly no matter which animal is tapped), play mode (tap the animals in the order that they pop up), and freestyle mode (tap the animals in any order to create your own tune). There is an option of changing to a keyboard when you feel your child is ready to make that transition. There are also 9 instrument options – piano, accordion, clarinet, acoustic guitar, xylophone, drum, harmonica, harp, and animal noises! When a tune is completed, all of the animals pop out of their holes to dance as the tune replays. The result is sheer happiness!

Strictly Hoofer is a story about a horse who is sad because he has lost his dancing music. His friends cheer him up with the help of the Boogie Box. The Boogie Box is an interactive music making app with over 500 possible combinations of instruments! Kids can jam with the band to create their own music after reading the story. Teachers could use this story to as a springboard to creative writing. Have kids create shrinky-dinks of themselves and write their own adventure 🙂

The 16 characters in this app each have their own sound and rhythm. Kids drag different combinations of performers on stage to create their own musical band. How a character plays depends on where he/she is placed on the stage. Characters can also be chosen to give a solo performance. Even the names of the characters are fun: Bang Bang Chef on the drums, Dancy Nancy on the piano, Shaky McBones on the maracas,etc. Another great educational app from a developer that makes learning what it should be – fun, creative, and joyful!

Happy Independence Day! To celebrate, Caspar Babypants Music Time is FREE today! Chris Ballew, lead singer of Presidents of the United States, is now playing music for kids. His 6 Caspar Babypants albums include both original and classic songs. The app comes with 12 songs (2 from each album) and the ability to add any Caspar Babypants albums that you already own. You can also purchase more songs on iTunes. Kids can sing along with and/or accompany the songs using a xylophone, guitar, or percussion instruments. The xylophone and guitar are “smart instruments” – the notes change with the song being played. There is also sing/play mode that displays the lyrics and the chords for that kids (young & old) who already play an instrument. This mode has a turtle button to slow things down for kids who are trying to learn. There are so many things to love about this educational app – colorful artwork, upbeat songs, fun ways to interact! Super cute fun for the little ones in your life.

Music teachers, take note (no pun intended) – this app would be great to use in class. Project it onto a large screen for the class to see, pass out the percussion instruments, and jam/sing along!

The 25 minute concert begins with Mozart’s Piano Sonata No. 11 and gradually winds down to end with Brahms’ Lullaby. The app has a special feature called the Sleep Keeper™  which detects crying then replays the softest music tracks to help your baby drift back to sleep. The app also features a Sleep Diary™ which works like a stopwatch. It records the length of overnight sleeps and/or naps and logs the times. Parents can tag sleep sessions to indicate teething or illness. The diary also compares your baby’s sleep with the suggested amounts of sleep for babies of the same age. The app works with AirPlay for transmission to wireless speakers or Apple TV. What a great app for the nursery!!

FREE for a limited time – ABC Music, an educational app that teaches kids about 50 musical instruments in an engaging way. The words are arranged on a ABC grid. If you tap on a word, the app brings the word up on a full screen. The full screen includes fun facts, interactive scenes, and links to a featured You Tube videos about the instrument. Of course, internet access is required to watch the videos. Even though children cannot link from the featured videos to the You Tube website, there is an option to disable the videos in the settings. I did not watch every video in the app but the developer claims that they were all tested for appropriateness. The app can be used in English, Spanish, or dual language mode. All in all, a great app for introducing kids to musical instruments!
