Wonderopolis

FREE – Wonderopolis, the educational app. Now you can explore Wonderopolis (the website) from your mobile device.

Wonderopolis (Wonderopolis | Where the Wonders of Learning Never Cease) is a fantastic website that provides a daily Wonder of the Day®. An intriguing question is posed each day. There is a written explanation of the answer (which you can read on your own or listen to), vocabulary words (with a word challenge), a gallery of images & videos – all to inspire curiosity and learning about the day’s wonder. Other daily features include a “Try It Out” section which suggests activities based on the day’s question, a “Still Wondering” section which gives additional/related information. and a quiz. There is also a section for teachers/parents called the “Educator Sandbox” which has additional resources and opportunities to connect with the Wonderopolis community.

Using this app/website would be a fabulous addition to a daily classroom routine. Kids could read the daily Wonder of the Day® as part of their independent work time. They could journal about what they learned and/or are still wondering about. A class discussion could be scheduled for later. What a great way to encourage THINKING!  Wonderopolis is a fabulous resource to ignite the natural curiosity and imagination of kids!

Geo-Me!

Geo-Me

FREE for a limited time – Geo-Me!, a geography app for elementary-aged students. Kids are introduced to world geography by “Geo-Me”s (cute rounded avatars) who live all over the world! This educational app has music & animations to capture the interest of younger students but it also has multiple types of maps (normal, anthrome, climate, population, & elevation) and lots of interesting facts for older students. Using  the iPad’s location, the app creates a “Geo-Me” to represent the user. Children can then use their “Geo Me” avatars to compare and contrast their location on Earth to other avatar’s locations. There are many opportunities to use the information in this app for a variety of lessons – making a table, Venn diagrams, math word problems… the list goes on! This first version of the app introduces 6 residents of the “Geo-Me!” world – their video stories are included. More characters will join them in the near future. Check it out… Geo-Me! helps kids recognize their location’s uniqueness from and similarities to other locations!

Barefoot World Atlas

Barefoot World Atlas

To celebrate the 5th anniversary of the App Store, Barefoot World Atlas is FREE for a limited time. This educational app features a 3D interactive globe that invites children to explore and learn about the countries and regions of our world.  The app is beautifully designed with wonderful animated illustrations by artist David Dean. The narration is done by geographer Nick Crane from BBC television. In addition to learning about the continents and oceans, kids will learn about Earth’s people, wildlife, landmarks, natural features, famous buildings, and other interesting things. This app is very engaging – there is so much to discover & learn! Kids of all ages will get lost for hours as they spin, zoom, and fly around the globe to learn about our planet. VERY cool!!

American History Time Line

FREE again for a limited time from McGraw Hill – American History Timeline. Kids can navigate the timeline to read about the hundreds of important people, places, and events that have shaped American history. When kids tap on a thumbnail photo, this educational app brings up a larger image and an explanation of the person, place, or event. The majority  of the drawings/photos used are from Library of Congress. There are 7 categories (such as women, inventors, constitution, etc.) that can be turned on and off so kids can see figures and/or events specific to that category. World events are also included on a parallel timeline. Two games are included: Time Line Scramble and Memory. Kids sequence events in the correct order with the Time Line Scramble Game. In the Memory Game, they match the correct date with the correct event or person.

I really like the design of the app – the ability to customize what categories you want to look at, the authenticity of the drawings/photos, the parallel world history timeline for comparison. It would be great for teaching kids read or create timelines. I only wish that it included more. Hopefully the developers will add more information in updates.

The Amazing Train

Amazing Train

FREE for a limited time – The Amazing Train, an interactive adventure story set in India. Rajeev and Lalita have the opportunity to visit the Magnificent Train. Kids travel along with the characters to discover what make this train so special. The 3D illustrations and animations in this app are quite unique – making this story a stand out among e-books. As kids listen to or read the story, they are also introduced to the culture of India. This educational app even includes a recipe for an Indian dessert – yum! This story would be great for a social studies unit on different cultures. I love books that give kids a glimpse of how other cultures live!
