Educreations is great FREE app that turns your iPad into a recordable whiteboard. The app was just updated a few days ago – November 22, 2013. It is simple to use and permits you to build lessons with multiple pages or slides. The editing tools in Educreations allow you to resize and move images as well as create “animated playback” by dragging objects as you record.

Another bonus of this app is that free accounts are available at http://www.educreations.com. There users can share their work as well as look at lessons created by others. Toca Tailor Fairy Tales

image

FREE again for iPhone/iPad, Toca Tailor Fairy Tales has kids designing and tailoring clothes for two fairy tale characters. With a tap, the style of clothing can be changed. The length of the sleeves, pants, etc. is easily adjusted with a swipe. Kids then choose different colors & prints of fabric or they can create their own fabric using the built-in fabric camera. They can also access and use pictures from the camera roll. There are trims to add – buttons, pockets, etc. Finally, kids choose accessories – hats, scarves, shoes, etc. Kids can take a picture of their finished creations like they can in so many apps. BUT…. in this educational app you can use your own room as a background – how unique! Kids could create their own little elf, take pictures of it all over the house, and write their own “elf-on-a-shelf” story. The possibilities for creative writing using this feature are endless – LOVE it!! Very open-ended & creative for hours of fun!

Math Racer®

FREE for a limited time – an educational app that  normally sells for $4.99. Math Racer times how fast kids can answer 10, 20, 50 or 100 problems in 7 different games: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, add/subtract, multiply/divide, or all operations. I like kids being able to practice related operations together – it makes them pay attention to operational signs & see connections. The app keeps high scores for all areas. It shows which problems were missed and how long it took to answer each question (to the hundredth of a second). Teachers and parents can use this tracking system to document kids’ progress.

This app provides a simple but fun way for kids to practice their facts. I can’t imagine that they won’t love racing the clock to improve their scores. If it is loaded on an iPhone, kids could easily practice their facts in the car on their way to after-school lessons. 🙂

Common Core Standards met:

  • 1.OA.6 – Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.
  • 2.OA.2 – Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.

Endless Reading

From the makers of Endless Alphabet comes Endless Reading, an educational app currently listed as an “Editor’s Choice” by Apple. The cute little monsters from Endless Alphabet are back! This time their goal is to teach kids sight words. As kids build the words, the letters say their sounds. And when the word is completed, it comes alive to reflect its meaning. B-a-l-l turns into a ball, d-o-g wags its tail, etc. So fun!! Next the word is used in context. Kids help by placing the sight words into a sentence which is then acted out by the friendly monsters to show its meaning. The app comes with 6 words to try. Additional word sets are available with an in-app purchase. Check out this adorable app – kids will LOVE it!!

Bogga Alphabet

FREE today – Bogga Alphabet, an educational app designed by a dad. He created it to be a digital toy that encourages creative play and teaches the alphabet. Your child starts by choosing an upper case alphabet letter.  After the letter is named, your child can paint it one of 6 colors. Once painted, the letter becomes a refrigerator magnet. In “the kitchen” your child can use his/her letters to spell words or short messages. There is a wastebasket to get rid of letters that are not needed. There is also a camera to take a picture of your child’s creation (which is saved in your photos). This option allows you to create a scene that you can then pull into story telling apps such as Art Maker, Story Time, etc. (see earlier reviews). This app is straightforward – it is simple to use and there are no third-party ads or in-app purchases. the latest update includes letter sounds and lower case letters. Nicely done app for little ones. 🙂

American History Time Line

FREE again for a limited time from McGraw Hill – American History Timeline. Kids can navigate the timeline to read about the hundreds of important people, places, and events that have shaped American history. When kids tap on a thumbnail photo, this educational app brings up a larger image and an explanation of the person, place, or event. The majority  of the drawings/photos used are from Library of Congress. There are 7 categories (such as women, inventors, constitution, etc.) that can be turned on and off so kids can see figures and/or events specific to that category. World events are also included on a parallel timeline. Two games are included: Time Line Scramble and Memory. Kids sequence events in the correct order with the Time Line Scramble Game. In the Memory Game, they match the correct date with the correct event or person.

I really like the design of the app – the ability to customize what categories you want to look at, the authenticity of the drawings/photos, the parallel world history timeline for comparison. It would be great for teaching kids read or create timelines.
