Professor Fizzy is holding a competition for 6 – 8 year olds to see who qualifies to be the next Lunch Labber. The app includes 8 challenges that use math and problem solving skills – deductive reasoning, mapping, sorting and classifying. Kids must navigate their way through a grocery store, buy groceries, count out the correct change in a check-out line, successfully serve the correct food to hungry customers, use reasoning to find Freddy, and more. This educational app supports multiple users with self-leveling games that make the challenge specific to each child. FUN!!

In Look Out Larry, kids help Larry stay safe and find a cozy place to sleep by helping to protect him from the dangers of the Australian bush – a spider, a snake, a brush fire, etc. At the end, there is an alternative version of the story called Larry’s Dream. Larry dreams of defending himself against the dangers of the bush in some cute & clever ways. This educational app also includes a matching game.
In Lost Larry, kids help Larry find his way home across rivers, over canyons, over a rickety bridge, etc. This is Larry’s third and most ambitious adventure! Kids will love helping Larry make it home. They pet his little green head to put him to sleep once he gets there! Cute!!

Color Uncovered & Sound Uncovered
Two FABULOUS & FREE educational apps from the Exploratorium!! Both interactive books contain illusions, articles, and videos. These apps make science fun by answering questions like – What color is a whisper? Are there secret messages in music played backward? Kids will love the illusions and you won’t believe these apps are FREE! Very interesting – for kids AND their parents/teachers.
Curious George at the Zoo
Curious George at the Zoo is currently FREE (again) for iPhone/iPad. Designed for preschoolers, this educational app has kids helping Curious George wake, clean, and feed animals in the zoo. Introduced by the Man with the Yellow Hat (of course), the app then asks your child where he/she would like to go. But, buyer beware – there is only one section of zoo (Sunny Safari) included with the initial purchase of the app – normally $.99.
There are 5 animals for kids to learn about in this app – the hippo. giraffe, lion, parrot, and elephant. First they wake the animal up, then they clean it and feed it – fairly simple activities. Also included are age-appropriate video clips about each animal. Kids can play a game (Safari Showers) and collect stickers.
I have always loved Curious George books – the stories are timeless and can be enjoyed by kids from preschool through first/second grade. The simplicity of this app makes it most appropriate for Curious George’s youngest fans (2 – 3 year olds). I am disappointed that kids are given “a choice” of where they would like go in the app when there is only one area available without additional purchases. Choices are presented in a cute pop-up book but 3 out of 4 pages are covered by a huge “tap here to purchase” button. It feels similar to having the candy in the checkout line of the grocery story. That being said, if you have 2 – 3 year old that loves Curious George, you may want to download this app.

Let’s Learn How to Draw
FREE today only – Let’s Learn How to Draw. This educational app provides interactive drawing lessons for kids. Lessons are taught by breaking the drawings into individual strokes. Kids build their drawings one stroke at a time by following the app’s visual and written instructions. There is an “assist mode” that automatically corrects the strokes as they are made. The assist mode can also be turned off so that the child can practice drawing on their own. Personally, I prefer this option. 🙂 Both modes have lightly dotted lines for the child to draw over. There are currently 4 modules of this app – monsters, trains, and dogs. Each module has five lessons with slightly increasing difficulty; but, all lessons are fairly simple with step-by-step instructions. Kids can also color their creations when they are finished drawing. The app also includes a scratchpad for open-ended drawing and coloring. Finished creations can be exported into your photos. This app is a nicely done for your budding artist! FREE today – tomorrow it will be back to $1.99.
