As kids explore the globe, they can tap on places or objects to learn more. Full descriptions are included as well as more than 900 photos. The app is very user-friendly – just a tap along the bottom to access its different features. One feature changes the map from a physical map to a political map. Another feature turns the latitude and longitude lines on. Kids can also click a button to turn on the weather. This app is full of great information! It would be a great addition to any classroom – perfect for projecting on to a Smart-board.

Record of Reading

Record of Reading is a FREE educational app from Clemson University. The app provides an electronic form for running records, an oral reading assessment developed by Marie M. Clay. Teachers need to code and the analyze the child’s reading as they would with a paper/pencil running record. However, there is no need for a calculator because the app has formulas for accuracy and self-corrections embedded within it. The app also records the student’s voice as the teacher is taking the record. When the running record is replayed, the oral reading and the written record are synced.  Running records can be saved and emailed – perfect for sharing with an intervention specialist or for adding to digital portfolios. The latest upgrade includes integration with Dropbox. If you are an elementary school teacher who uses running records, you are going to want to look at this educational app. 🙂

imagePoetics – create, write and share visual poetry is FREE again. Writing visual poetry is easy with Poetics. The app combines photographic imagery and moveable text. Just choose a picture from your camera roll and write how it makes you feel – a word, a caption, or a poem. Or you can write a poem then search for the perfect image to accompany it. Words can be scaled, rotated, etc. as they are placed on the page. The app saves each project as it is being created. Finished poetry can be shared on Instagram, Facebook, postcards, and more. Kids could use Poetics to create and share postcards or journal entries of their summer activities. How fun!!

FREE today – Path On, a must-have app with many creative uses!! What does Path On do? It permits you to put text in a path across photos from your albums or taken with your device’s camera. It’s extremely simple to use. Text can be typed in a free path, square, circle, paragraph or spiral. You can also change font styles, colors, and effects. Path On is classified as a photo & video app but there are so many possibilities for using this app in education. Kids could type descriptions of themselves on their pictures, write poetry to go with an image, take photos then point out geometric shapes found in their environment, write a thank you note on a picture of them with the gift, create a timeline by using a series of pictures, create a travel log of the family vacation, and on and on and on. Creations can be saved and shared via Facebook, Instagram, Flickr, Twitter & email. WOW – what a fabulous tool!!

Kids can write, direct, and star in their own TV shows with this educational app. Kids choose a theme to start: The News, Star Adventure, Eye Spy, or their own creation. Then they mix and match scenes to create their story. Next they craft a script using the prompts within the app or their own ideas. Then it’s time for the show! Kids choose one of fifty digital costumes for their performance.They perform and record their show which includes animated scenes and special effects. Recordings can be saved to the camera roll to be shared with classmates, family, and friends. How fun!!

Teachers, check out “The News” theme for use in your classroom. Kids can choose to be different types of reporters: The Beat, The Sports Roundup, The News Desk, The Weather, The Critic, or The Eye in the Sky.
