FREE for a limited time – Word Wonderland (Primary) and Word Wonderland (Elementary), games that have kids hoping, eating, and shaking their way to the end of a game board as they sort words. Children start by creating name badges – the app permits multiple children to play. In the primary (K – 2) version, kids help to guide a friendly frog through the pond as they sort words by sounds – short vowels. long vowels, r controlled vowels, blends, digraphs, and more. In the elementary (3 – 6) version, kids guide an astronaut crab through the space station as they sort more difficult words by sounds, inflectional endings, Greek/Latin roots, etc. These educational apps provide a fun way for kids to sort words but I am a bit apprehensive about encouraging kids to shake the iPad. In this app kids help put eight circus animals to bed by switching off the lights or blowing out candles. Each circus animal wants to show his tricks off before going to sleep – super cute! The app has all of the same great features as the original – cute animals, sleepy lullaby music, great narration, and fabulous artwork done by Heidi Wittlinger. It’s no wonder that Nighty Night Circus is on Apple’s Best of 2014 list!

Tiggly StoryTiggly Story Maker: Build Words and Record Your Own Tales makes creating three-letter words (with the CVC pattern) fun. Two consonants sit on the bottom of the screen with a space in between them. The five vowels dangle above the space. Kids drop a vowel into the space to see if they can make a word. If a word is made, the animated object appears on the screen. If a word is not made, the vowel springs off the page. Kids can build more than forty CVC words with this app. In the process they will find more than 200 fun interactions such as pigs falling in love and pugs catching a cab. The app is great for reinforcing short vowel sounds and the CVC pattern. It would be a nice addition to a kindergarten or first grade classroom.

The Secret Lab Kids want to show elementary students (ages 5 – 9) that science is fun. The app has five areas to explore: 1. The Library features an interactive gallery of famous scientists and inventors. Kids will learn about the scientists’ lives as well as what they discovered or invented. Also included are fun facts and quotes. 2. The Theater features six science-themed music videos and six episode clips.  3. In the Secret Lab, kids can play with interactive laboratory equipment and learn about science experiments that they can do at home. 4. In HoloCenter kids can meet the Secret Lab Kids and preview their 3D HoloCards.  5. The Arcade features games: Honey Bee Spree, Kafloooey Ka-Splat, and Von Bolt’s Circuit Switch. This educational app provides a great introduction to some basic science concepts in a way that is appealing to kids. Science IS fun!

Lily the farmer leads kids through a series of games that teach preschool/K skills: colors, shapes, counting 1 – 10, groups & categories, sequencing & patterns, addition & subtraction. I like that the app teaches shapes in two ways – a circle and a donut, an oval and a watermelon, a rectangle and a bus, etc. And, I was particularly impressed that it names a kite shape as a rhombus. As kids play, they help the cute farm animals (Pinkie the pig, Oliver the horse, Bessie the cow, Cordelia the chicken, Gordon the goat, Sherman the sheep, Webster the duck, Pete the frog) find their way back home. The app is bright, colorful and full of positive encouragement. Nicely done, this app is sure to appeal to little ones.
