Count Money FREE

FREE iPhone/iPad app for counting money. This FREE version has two levels – easy and medium. The full version has two additional levels and a quiz mode. This app is simple to use. Kids count quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies to show an amount of money. They press + and – buttons to add coins to their work area until they are ready to check their answer. The app tallies the number correct out of 10, 25, or 50. A concern – the app only shows the heads of the coins. Kids need to see heads, tails, and different kinds of quarters, etc. It would also be more challenging to require kids to come up with the least number of coins for the amount of money. When I was teaching, I found that some kids avoided using quarters and nickels because it was more difficult. This app provides good basic practice for kids but eventually kids will need more of a challenge before they master counting money – perhaps that is available in the full version.

This app provides some of the background knowledge that kids will need to meet this second grade standard.

  • 2.MD.8 – Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately.

Games are timed and scored (based on accuracy) as kids play. The app also keeps track of the best times and the highest scores. If your children like matching games – this would be a good choice. Vocabulicious Kinder

Vocabulicious Kinder for the iPhone/iPad is a flashcard app designed to help preschoolers and kindergartners increase their vocabulary. The FREE version includes 4 categories: animals, more animals, fruit, and plants. 14 additional categories are available as in-app purchases. Children earn stars by correctly tapping on the named/written object. The images on the flashcards are high quality photographs. There is an option to show either 2 or 4 cards at a time which permits adults to adjust the level to meet their child’s needs. There is also an option to set the type to be all caps or lowercase letters. The settings permit you to have up to 4 players. This app could be used with toddlers, students with language delays, or ESL students. Check out the FREE version if your child needs to work on vocabulary development.

All About Pumpkins

All About Pumpkins is a nonfiction e-book for the iPhone/iPad. Using simple text and photographs, it explains how pumpkins are grown and how they are used in the fall. The app is simple to use – kids just tap on the page to advance the narrative. This book would be great to read to younger children before/after visiting a pumpkin patch – short, but nicely done.

Clover

FREE for a limited time, this iPad story is about an architect’s dog named Clover. Clover’s owner has to travel to China and Clover decides to stowaway in his luggage so that she can go along. The suitcase is put on the wrong plane and Clover is stranded on the other side of the world. The story follows Clover’s adventures as she makes her way from Paris to Moscow to Beijing and back to Denver. Along the way she makes a friend and sees some of the world’s architectural masterpieces. The unique thing about this app is the way that it is designed. As you read the story and  swipe from page to page, you are actually controlling the action in the story. The faster you swipe, the faster Clover runs, the subway moves, etc. It almost feels like a movie at times. This app was a collaborative effort between Fentress Architects and Soma Creates. The result is a cute educational story that uses technology in a creative & unique way. Kids will love it!

FREE for a limited time for the iPhone/iPad, Treasure Kai and the Lost Gold of Shark Island is an adventure story of a 10-year-old treasure hunter named Kai. Kai is always dreaming about treasure and looking for it in his parents’ store: The Treasure Shop. Kai’s dreams magically transport him to Shark Island where he finds a treasure chest. And so the adventure begins…. Kids help in the hunt for gold by choosing from 8 different treasure chests. Each chest reveals another clue – leading Kai through more adventures. Along the way there are animations to discover, great sound effects, and an original score. This digital story is similar to the “choose your own adventure” books with an “Indiana Jones” feel to it. It is different every time it is read with thousands of ways to find the treasure. This app would be great for kids who are a bit older and becoming independent readers. Very cool 🙂

Giggle Ghosts

This counting iPad app for toddlers is FREE today – just in time for Halloween! The giggle ghosts are very cute – kids will love to hear them laugh. Kids help 20 ghosts get the party by bouncing them across rooftops. In the first level the sky is clear and they have to bounce 5 ghosts. The app counts to 5 and shows the written numbers. The second level is the same but there are leaves blowing in the sky. In the third level there are clouds in the sky and in the fourth level it is raining – both provide additional practice counting from 1- 5. At the end, all 20 ghosts at the party are counted. This app is great for little ones at Halloween – nothing scary, just fun & friendly ghosts going to a party. 🙂
