Kids Zoo

Kids Zoo introduces your child to 45 different animals from 4 different categories: wild, farm, birds, and water. It is very easy to use – just tap. First tap the category you want to explore, then tap an animal. A photo of the animal appears. You can tap the photo for another photo of the same animal. Tap the speaker next to the animal’s name and it is pronounced. Tap the sound icons to hear the sound that the animal makes. There are two sound icons for each animal (one blue and one pink) but no explanation of the difference. The most interesting thing about this app is that there are connections to 30 LIVE webcams at zoos all around the world. You can see the polar bear at the San Diego Zoo, the tiger at the London Zoo, etc. if you connect at the right time. Since these zoos are all over the world, the animals may be sleeping, the time zones may not match up, etc. Another potential issue is the speed/quality of your connection. I was able to connect to several webcams but was not fortunate enough to see any real action. Interesting to explore – if you have a great connection!

This app for the iPhone/iPad is FREE for a limited time.

Flashcard Ninja

flashcard ninjaFREE for a limited time – Flashcard Ninja, an educational app for practicing addition and subtraction with numbers 1 – 20. Kids embark on a journey to become a math ninja. They can record their own sounds to accompany the ninja’s karate moves – a feature that is sure to be a hit. As they answer mixed addition/subtraction questions posed by the ninja master, the “math ninjas” win trophies for their trophy room. A 10, 20, or 30 second timer can be set to allow more time for kids who need it. The timer can also be turned completely off. I wish the app had a setting to customize a child’s practice – addition only, subtraction only, mixed facts up to 10, etc. It would also be nice if the app gathered data. Perhaps the developers will add these options in an update. In the meantime, I can see how this app might appeal to some kids who are otherwise reluctant to practice math. So, check it out while it’s free to see if it works for your children.

Sago Mini Road Trip

image

FREE for a limited time – Sago Mini Road Trip, a darling app for preschoolers. Kids go on a road trip with Jinja the cat. Each adventure begins by answering three questions: where are we going, what do we need to take, and what vehicle will we drive. There are six destinations: a big city, a beach, the mountains, and more. Once kids decide where to go, it’s time to pack their suitcases with the appropriate clothing and items for their chosen destination. Then they get to choose a fun vehicle to drive – a bus, a hot dog, a sporty car, a pickle, etc. I love the conversations that this app would inspire as kids prepare for their trips, especially when they go to pack their bags. Once the car is loaded, off they go. They can stop to wash their vehicle, gas it up, or just to enjoy the sites along the way. This educational app is cute and great for language development!

Mr. Sandman

imageFREE for a limited time – Mr. Sandman is a beautiful, interactive bedtime story for the iPad/iPhone. The story does a nice job of addressing a common fear of childhood. It is about a young boy who is afraid of the dark. The sandman appears and the boy drifts off to sleep. In his dream, he meets an owl who shows him wonderful & magical things about the dark. The app features incredibly beautiful artwork and dreamy music – perfect to set the mood for the story. But the most wonderful thing about this app is the way that it transitions from page to page. Kids move the story forward in a variety of unique ways. They help the sandman sprinkle the sand, say “Shhh” to calm the frogs, scratch the owl’s belly, touch the moon, and more. Each page transitions to the next page in a uniquely delightful way. And, the app can be switched different languages – nine in all. Mr. Sandman is wonderful – don’t miss it! 🙂
